Quality Assurance for the Memorial Industry
The method of ground anchor testing has been derived from criteria originally laid down by NAMM and incorporated into BS8415. Current testing meets BS8415-2018 guidance. The method and results of individual tests are supervised and recorded by an Independent Structural Engineer and witnessed by two NAMM representatives. A NAMM Accreditation certificate is provided for each product successfully passing the required test procedure and subsequently signed off by the Independent Structural Engineer.
The mason must initially assess the ground conditions before fixing a memorial and ensure the appropriate fixing method for the situation (See the current edition of NAMM’s Code of Working Practice for guidance).
Ground anchor manufacturers will provide guidance regarding the applicable use of their products.
NAMM accreditation requires assurance from the individual manufacturers that there will be no changes to the technical specification of the accredited system or any deviation from the fixing procedure witnessed and recorded at the time of accreditation. NAMM accreditation will specifically relate to the product design, specification, and method of use as recorded at the time of the initial accreditation testing, as verified by the Independent Structural Engineer.
All manufacturers must provide detailed fixing instructions with their products, and memorial fixers must comply with fitting instructions to ensure the correct method of use and application. The memorial fixer must ensure correct procedures are strictly followed, particularly regarding hole sizes and depth stops (height/protrusion of fixing above foundation surface, which is inserted into the memorial base). Any depth stops must be applied strictly according to the manufacturer’s specified instructions.
Product liability is the responsibility of the manufacturer/supplier.
All fixing systems must be made of stainless steel in accordance with BS8415-2018.
