Quality Assurance for the Memorial Industry

Memorial Safety Inspection

Safety Inspection and Assessment of Memorials

Best Practice requires all training to be relevant and fit for purpose.

NAMM City & Guilds Assured training, combined with City & Guilds NPTC final assessments, provides trusted quality assurance that is second to none.

Brief Overview – Aims and Objectives

A one-day training course is structured around the Ministry of Justice guidelines ‘Managing the Safety of Burial Ground Memorials’ and British Standards BS8145-2018 Annex A. The focus is on a ‘Risk Assessment’ based approach as outlined in the NAMM SIAM Training manual. All aspects of memorial assessment will be covered in the course, from understanding different types of natural stone and the way in which it changes with time, through to memorial construction and how this might impact decisions on safety. The course also covers the establishment of appropriate safety inspection procedures, the recording of data, and the correct methods of testing and assessing memorials of all types and dimensions.

The critical subject of ‘making safe’ and having in place an exit strategy will also be covered.

The morning will be spent in the classroom studying in-depth theory and visual examples of memorials of all types and various scenarios relating to memorial safety, remedial action, and practicalities of inspection planning, HSE, and applicable current legislation. The afternoon will be spent in a local cemetery putting the theory into practice.

SIAM training can be provided at suitable venues all over the UK, the only requirement being a minimum of 6 candidates, a room with power and seating, and of course, a nearby cemetery for the afternoon practical and theory session. Burial authorities can join forces to make up the minimum numbers and enable the training to come to you.

Please contact enquiries@namm.org.uk for more information and booking forms.

Please note: Attending the one-day training course alone does not qualify candidates to carry out memorial safety inspections; it is a precursor for a final assessment consisting of written and practical elements after which successful candidates will be awarded the NAMM City & Guilds Assured Certificate of competence for the Safety Inspection and Assessment of Memorials and their Digital Credentials.

Course aims: To provide assurance of achieving the required standards of application and knowledge via NAMM City & Guilds Assured training. To enable the establishment and undertaking of relevant and appropriate procedures through the application of relevant knowledge and understanding to recognise, record, and report potential hazards within burial grounds (SIAM) and to put into place suitable remedial action to remove recognised potential hazards.

Final Assessment Objective: To demonstrate the ability to enable and undertake SIAM assessment procedure, to prove required knowledge, to record, report and initiate correct and appropriate procedures (exit strategy).

Assessment Criteria: To demonstrate through practical demonstration and a written questionnaire the necessary understanding, knowledge, and practical ability to establish and undertake the safe and appropriate Safety Inspection and Assessment of Memorials procedure in accordance with Ministry of Justice and BS8415-2018 guidance.

Successful candidates will be awarded the NAMM City & Guilds Assured *SIAM Certification and their achievement registered as *Digital Credentials on the City & Guilds Assured website database.

*SIAM Certification: All candidates who successfully complete SIAM City and Guilds Assured Training and the confirmatory City and Guilds NPTC assessment are issued a NAMM City & Guilds Assured Certificate and provided with a City and Guilds Digital Credential, which confirms individual candidate achievement and course content-description/metadata embedded into their personal online City and Guilds Assured database. Their digital credential is emailed to each successful candidate directly from City and Guilds Assured.

*Digital Credentials: The earners of Assured credentials can quickly and easily share their achievement with employers and other organizations and embed them in their own online-professional profiles such as LinkedIn or in their CV, allowing candidates to instantly validate their achievement and provide assurance and confirmation of their proven SIAM expertise. The Digital Credential provides third-party validation and a permanent record that the candidate has met the stringent training and practical application of NAMM City & Guilds Assured SIAM procedures. City and Guilds Assured training and digital credentials are a trusted format meeting best practice requirements regarding training and final certification of required knowledge and proven ability.
